Launch of coordinated enforcement action on the right to erasure

05th March 2025

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is pleased to announce its participation in the European Data Protection Board’s 2025 Coordinated Enforcement Framework (CEF). 32 Supervisory Authorities (SAs) across the European Economic Area will take part in the CEF throughout 2025, which is focussing on the “right to erasure” in accordance with Article 17 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The right to erasure, also known as the “right to be forgotten”, is one of the most frequent topics for queries and complaints that come in to the DPC from data subjects, and it is a cornerstone of the GDPR. It enables individuals to have their data erased by the data controller, without undue delay, if one of a number of conditions applies.

The DPC will take part in this action by sending questionnaires to 40 data controllers across the public and private sectors to aid a fact-finding exercise. The results will be aggregated and analysed together to generate deeper insight into the topic, allowing for targeted follow-ups on both national and EU levels.

This action is the fourth initiative under the Coordinated Enforcement Framework (CEF), whose objectives include cooperation between data protection authorities. The DPC contributed to the 2024 CEF action on the right of access in February last year.
