The Data Protection Commission welcomes European Data Protection Board statement on age assurance

The Data Protection Commission welcomes the recent statement adopted by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on age assurance. The statement, adopted at the EDPB’s February 2025 plenary meeting, lists ten principles for the compliant processing of personal data when determining the age or age range of an individual.

In recognition of the importance of a consistent approach at EU level on the topic of age  assurance, the EDPB wishes to provide specific guidance and high-level principles stemming  from the GDPR that should be taken in consideration when personal data is processed in the  context of age assurance. The proposed principles seek to reconcile the protection of children and the protection of personal data in the context of age assurance.

Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Dolan commented:

The DPC was delighted to have been a co-rapporteur on this important statement on age assurance published by the EDPB. This statement aims to ensure a consistent European approach to age assurance, one which protects children’s wellbeing, while also complying with data protection principles."
